Why a German shepherd’s nutrition is different than other breeds?

Obviously, German shepherds are large and very active dogs, their nutritional requirements are higher in quality and quantity than smaller and lazier dogs.

In addition, purebred GSD dogs are prone to numerous health issues mostly affecting bones and joints because they are more susceptible to injury and problems as they grow very fast!

Commun German shepherd health issues :

Many commercial foods contain grains like wheat, soy, and corn which are difficult for a German shepherd’s sensitive system to digest and may cause or worsen allergies and skin disorders, which’s why owners must be very selective when it comes to their GSD’s food.

Why homemade food?

One first simple reason is that homemade food closely mimics the biological and nutritional requirements of the dogs’ ancestors. In other words, it is much similar to what dogs used to find in the wild! It has the same smell, moisture, and consistency!

German shepherds are carnivores! Their diet must rely mainly on protein while dry kibble provides a diet consisting of at least 60% carbohydrate, very little moisture, and minimal low-quality protein that most of it is plant-based!

In addition, many studies show that industrial food cannot be the best choice for a dog!

A study guided by Dr. Kollath in Stockholm Sweden showed that young dogs fed a processed diet appeared to be healthy at the beginning, but once they reached adulthood, they began to rapidly age and develop degenerative disease symptoms.

Another report in Belgium utilized information assembled from more than 500 dogs, over a continuous 5 year period (from 1998 to 2002). Lippert and Sapy (the authors), analyzed the data and demonstrated that dogs fed homemade meals had 32 months longer life expectancy versus dogs fed processed industrial food.

That‘s nearly 3 years more!

Undoubtedly, the best and the most complete meal for a GSD is a homemade meal, away from preservatives coloring and flavoring agents. It allows owners to keep track of what their dogs eat and promotes healthier coats.

More than that, you will be able to make them delicious meals with all of their favorite ingredients as well as customizing the diet for dogs with special health conditions.

What does a balanced homemade meal contain?

A standard meal must be composed of:

  • Proteins: meat, fish, chicken, turkey, eggs…
  • vegetables
  • starches
  • vegetable oil
  • a mineral-vitamin food supplement
